Holidays

Hello everyone who still reads my blog! It’s been awhile since I’ve posted the last Inkscape tutorial. But this long hiatus was only in favor because I try to get more knowledge to share with you. And next year, I hope to prepare something quite different from the way it was before.

I want to say special thanks to those people who comes to my blog on a regular basis: the total number of views is more than 70 thousands and this number is growing every day. Thank you very much! These are the nice little things that make me very happy :)

About requested tutorials (unless you hadn’t proposed one, you can still do it :) I remember about them, but unfortunately I couldn’t make them as fast as I would like. And I’m doubly ashamed for that.

Also, if you haven’t noticed the widget on the right side of my blog, I opened a Facebook page related to my work, just to have a place to share my new works, news, projects, and etc. If you are interested, feel free to come inside :)

What about my future plans? There are a lot of them, but I won’t tell them, because everything can change overnight. So, I wish you a Merry Christmas and a happy New Year. Thanks for reading!

Buzzbuster [Ludum Dare 27]

This weekend I took part in Ludum Dare (for the fifth time). Ludum Dare is an accelerated video game development competition. The theme was "10 Seconds". For three days, our team created a game named Buzzbuster  - an arkanoid like game with bees in the hive. The game can be played here. It was super fun, as always, can not wait for the next Ludum Dare event.

All graphics for the game were created with Inkscape.

Creating a male cartoon avatar in Inkscape

Before we begin, I strongly recommend you to read the first tutorial in this series, named “Creating a female cartoon avatar in Inkscape”. Many steps of this tutorial are the same that in the previous one, so I’m going to omit them. They are: setting the interface, creating paths, choice of colors, adding volume etc. All these can be found here.

Fran Bow Fan Art

Fran Bow - is an awesome game that needs to be funded. If you like horror games and horror stories, you should check it out.

This fan art was made by me and devolonter (as an advisor) to support our mates, indie game developers from Killmonday studio.

Creating a female cartoon avatar in Inkscape

Avatar is the graphical representation of the user in social networks, forums, games etc. In other words, it’s his alter ego. Usually 2D-avatar is a square image which has a small size (100x100px, 64x64px). And that's why we should delete all unwanted items and keep the most important ones when you create it. Otherwise, it would be either difficult to see the details after size reduction, or they will make the image blurry.

Creating symbol font in Inkscape

Symbol font has nothing in common with symbol set of alphabet letters. It consists of symbols that can not be read and it is often used as a decoration. For modern web developers such font become the real escape from the infinite routine, which is connected with the preparation of icons (for example, social network icons) to display on different devices. When there is only one symbol - it seems not so difficult. But if you have several dozen of such symbols? Thanks to symbol fonts there is no need to save one file in different resolutions.

Drawing in perspective with Inkscape

When you come across with perspective for the first time, in the beginning it seems that this artistic tool is very difficult to master. But in fact, everything is much easier — you just have to understand what it represents. And eventually tenacity and practice will do the trick.

To begin with, let’s discuss a little theory. Perspective is used for drawing three-dimensional object in the two-dimensional plane. Its use allows to visually enhance your picture. There are many types of perspectives, but we will examine the creation of the most basic ones.

Practice result and next tutorial

Here is my practice result drawing in isometric projection in Inkscape.

The feedback from the previous tutorial was absolutely amazing. So right now I’m working on the next one - “Drawing in perspective with Inkscape”.

Isometric projection in Inkscape

Isometric projection helps us to demonstrate three-dimensional objects on a plane, creating the illusion of volume. Most often it is used in computer games and pixel-art. You can read more about it in the corresponding article on Wikipedia.

In this article, we will examine ways to create objects in isometric projection by using Inkscape. These are:

  • Axonometric grid
  • Transformation of the object
  • Creating 3D boxes
